Indrawati adalah sosok wanita ndeso meskipun lama menetap di Surabaya. Tiap hari bergelut di pasar untuk kulakan barang untuk keperluan toko kelontongnya di kampung Simo Gunung.

Namun dia punya kelebihan. Suaranya merdu ketika menyanyi dangdut lengkap dengan cengkoknya. Dengan modal kegemaran berdangdut ria itulah dia ikut audisi acara Dangdut Mania Dadakan 2 yang digelar oleh TPI tiga tahun lalu. Ketika lolos di atas panggung dia punya nama beken artis ‘Super Emak’.

Dari situlah kemudian rezekinya mengalir deras. Kini Indrawati yang kelahiran Lamongan itu bukan lagi pedagang beras yang keluyuran di pasar. Tapi telah menjadi identitas baru sebagai Super Emak yang mengisi dunia selebritas.

Nama beken ibu dua anak ini melejit tidak hanya dikenal di Indonesia tapi juga dikenal sampai ke Singapura dan Malaysia. Sepekan lalu Super Emak blusukan ke beberapa kampung di Surabaya dan pasar rakyat untuk menyapa supporternya yang membuatnya menang dalam kontes itu.

Sejak memenangkan kontes Dangdut Mania, hari-harinya kini sibuk dengan pertunjukan. Sabtu hingga Minggu pekan lalu, ikut mengisi panggung hiburan megah berdampingan dengan musisi, penyanyi dan presenter papan atas. Bahkan dia didapuk menjadi presenter mendampingi presenter Ari K. Untung.

Dari kontes itu memang telah mengantarkan Indrawati menjadi bintang. Bukan hanya job menyanyi di panggung hiburan bahkan ada tawaran main sinetron. Sudah lima sinetron yang dia ikut mainkan yaitu Extra Heboh, Dukun Bokis, Kisah Nyata, Geng Dangdut, dan Cintaku Mentok di Angkot.

Apa sih rahasianya menjadi sukses? “Jangan ragu alias percaya diri. Kalau punya kemampuan, misalnya seperti saya menyanyi, ya itu harus dimatangkan. Suatu saat mungkin akan ada buahnya,” tegas Super Emak.

Kini keluarganya tak lagi tinggal di rumah kontrakan di Simo Gunung Tol Surabaya. Tapi membeli rumah di perumahan Griya Citra. Bahkan dia juga membeli rumah di kawasan Cibubur. “Memang tidak besar seperti yang dibayangkan orang, tapi bisa untuk tempat tinggal sementara. Anakku, Tya (10) dan Iqbal (8) kalau ke Jakarta sudah ada tempatnya. Kalau aku sibuk, mereka tinggal bersama Bulik,” ujarnya.

Keluarga tidak diboyong ke Jakarta? “Belum, biar selesai dulu sekolahnya. Aku nek show sapa sing ngopeni. Kemarin waktu liburan, keduanya saya ajak jalan-jalan. Kebetulan aku juga tidak banyak kerjaan. Untuk wisata itu, saya siapkan uang Rp 5 juta. “Ya wis ra apa-apa, wong hasil jerih payah ini memang untuk mereka. Saya bisa seperti ini juga berkat dorongan mereka,” katanya.

Punya cita-cita sebagai penyanyi? Super Emak mengatakan tidak ada. Namun begitu melihat ajang pencarian bakat di TPI yang pesertanya “orang heboh”, kedua anaknya mendorong. Menang atau tidak yang penting dicoba. Eh, ternyata lolos dan menjadi juara.

Juara itu bukan menjadi cita-citanya. Namun saat itu dia sempat bermimpi naik gunung dan dia sendiri yang sampai ke puncak paling tinggi. Sebelum ikut Dangdut Mania Dadakan, Super Emak sudah terbiasa menyanyi lagu dangdut sambil kerja di dapur. “Jangankan berjualan beras di toko atau di pasar, sambil ngulek sambal pun aku juga terus nyanyi,” katanya.

Saat di Surabaya dan berkunjung ke kampung maupun pasar, kemudian dipeluk atau dicium penggemar bagaimana rasanya? “Kalau dilakukan di hadapan orang banyak tidak masalah. No problem… Wong aku dulu juga orang pasar. Saya ingin menyenangkan mereka,” katanya.

Kalau dilakukan berdua dan di tempat sepi, kata Super Emak, berbahaya. “Apa sampeyan mau tak cium…,” tantang Super Emak pada seorang wartawan yang tanya di acara konferensi pers di Surabaya.

Ketika ditanya apa punya niat mencari pendamping lagi, Super Emak mengatakan tidak. Sepertinya wanita yang lahir di Kedung Pring, Lamongan 23 April (tahunnya dirahasiakan), masih trauma berumah tangga. Dia bercerai dengan suaminya delapan tahun lalu dan hingga kini tidak pernah bertemu lagi. “Sudah, enak begini, tidak ketemu lagi dengan dia,” kata Super Emak sambil menunjukkan bekas luka di dagu, akibat disakiti suaminya.

Super Emak memang heboh. Hampir di setiap pertemuan, dia selalu menjadi pusat perhatian. Selain bicaranya yang lugu dan polos khas orang desa, kadang juga sok menjadi orang kota. Dialognya menggunakan bahasa Inggris tapi tidak pas.

Begitu digelar konferensi pers, Super Emak juga bercerita pengalamannya dari penjual beras hingga menjadi selebritas. “Terima kasih pada teman-teman wartawan yang hadir pada acara ‘konpren kompres’ ini. Semoga tidak bosan-bosannya dengan Super Emak,” jelas dia.

Tentu saja wartawan bingung dengan kata ‘kopren kompres’ itu. Kemudian dijelaskan oleh panitia maksudnya konferensi pers. “Oalaa, Mak, Mak, sampeyan gak maju-maju,” celetuk wartawan.

Langsung saja Super Emak mereaksi celetukan itu. Sambil berdiri, dia berkacak pinggang dengan menunjukkan tubuhnya. “Masak gini kurang maju, mas,” jelas dia memamerkan kesintalan tubuhnya.

But do I know what dangdut really is?

I never attended any dangdut concerts when I lived in Indonesia. Without my recent Pittsburgh dangdut experience, I might never have had the chance to see Rhoma Irama and Soneta perform live. If this concert had been staged in Bandung, my parents would never have let me go.

Dangdut is popular, even populist (rakyat) music. It reflects the spirit, desire, and aspirations of ordinary people, whom we call "little people" (orang kecil) in Indonesian. They are the grassroots, the marginalized ones, the underclass. This genre is often equated with backwardness and vulgar taste (kampungan) derived from the life of the kampung.

In recent years, triggered by controversies around Inul Daratista's gyrating hip movements, I've been paying more attention to dangdut. because of Inul, dangdut has become a topic within political and cultural discourses.

But events at the Interdisciplinary Conference on Islam and Popular Culture in Indonesia and Malaysia at the University of Pittsburgh on Oct. 10-12 presented me with a reality that had never occurred even in my wildest dreams: a face-to-face with dangdut legend Rhoma Irama.

I admit to mixed feelings. I was excited to meet the legend, but I was pestered with doubts. Not because I wasn't a dangdut fan but because I couldn't set aside prejudices based on the redacted and possibly distorted persona of Rhoma Irama.

My preconceived opinion derived from the way Rhoma Irama has been represented in the media in discourses on Inul's moves. The conflict between Inul and Rhoma Irama functions as a stand-in for an ideological contest between religious values, patriarchy, conservatism and fundamentalism on the one hand and democracy, individual freedom and gender equality on the other. Discourses around this conflict have reduced Rhoma Irama to a one-dimensional, conservative and fundamentalist figure.

At the evening concert, I felt at first as if I were attending just one more formal Indonesian event. But then I realized it was the first live dangdut concert of my life! Surrealism took over.

Rhoma Irama and his band, Soneta, impressed me from their first song, Dangdut. But it wasn't until the fourth number that I finally joined in dancing, Joged Dangdut. As the band worked through their fifth, sixth and seventh songs, the dancing crowd grew bigger. The more I danced, the more I felt comfortable within myself. My emotion, my soul, got involved.

That evening, I got to experience what dangdut really is. I was part of a collective ritual, yet with my personal space remaining intact. My dangdut moment briefly liberated me from status, position, taste, style, image and other labels. That moment brought out the dangdutness in me. Yes, that kampungan in me!

In many discourses about dangdut, "the people" are positioned as backward, kampungan and opposed to progress and development. Intellectuals use these notions to criticize modernity. But through dangdut, in dangdut, and by dangdut, people find their identity, expression, and aspiration as well as a way to be themselves.

Dangdut is not monolithic, not homogeneous. It is neither a symbol of backwardness nor a symbol of progress. Dangdut can be a space where social, cultural and political contradictions meet. It is a space where everyday events encounter each other. In dangdut and through dangdut, I found my kampungan side which enables me to feel more comfortable and free.

Learn to love 'dangdut'

It may sound funny but I do have a theory that one of the reasons why Indonesia's young generation is losing its national identity is because it hates dangdut.

It's so obvious, no young and educated Indonesian likes dangdut. And I'm not just pointing my finger at my fellow young Indonesians, I have to admit, I don't like it either.

We young Indonesians don't like it so much that we have framed it as one of the most laughable topics for many years.

We feel sorry for people who actually dance to the rhythm of dangdut; We feel sorry for people who like Rhoma Irama. We laugh at them so happily knowing that their music is so kampungan (old fashioned) and our music is so much cooler.

We can sing any famous American singer's songs perfectly and we know the lyrics by heart.

Modern music concerts are common in this country, and it seems to me that every single one of them can easily attract a large number of young and educated Indonesians.

The Java Jazz Festival, for example, has been packed with young and educated Indonesians for four years, although when the festival was first introduced many people thought the tickets were unreasonably priced; but young Indonesians came anyway.

The same organizer just held an R&B festival called Soulnation which was successful in drawing a lot of young Indonesians -- they paid tickets worth at least Rp 200,000 (about US$20) and didn't complain. They came dressed in the latest R&B outfits, mimicking their idols, like Akon and Ashanti.

What's wrong with not liking dangdut one might ask. Well, it's not wrong, as one of my best friends pointed out to me that you can't blame someone for liking one type of music just as you can't blame someone for liking nasi goreng (fried rice).

But what we don't realize is that dangdut is our national treasure; It's part of our national heritage. What we don't realize is that dangdut is the music of our country, just like Project Pop said in its song "Dangdut is the music of my country" a few years ago.

What we don't realize is that when we laugh at dangdut, thinking that it's stupid music, it's like laughing at keroncong or any other Indonesian traditional music genre.

Sometimes I wonder why we can't fall in love with dangdut when young African Americans are so proud of their R&B and rap.

One of the reasons may lie in the fact that we are too arrogant to like the same kind of music that low-income Indonesians like; That we don't want to put ourselves on the same level as mas-mas and mba-mba (respectively older brother and older sister in Javanese).

If that is the kind of mentality that we all share, then I think we should feel sorry for ourselves for thinking that dangdut is so kampungan and that those people who like it just don't have any taste in music. We should feel sorry for ourselves for not realizing how music, like language, could be a very effective medium to unite us all.

Imagine if all young Indonesians, whether rich or poor, could at least agree that dangdut is something we all could enjoy together. We would be more united.

Apparently it's the responsibility for anyone working in the dangdut industry to find a way to make the music more attractive to young and educated Indonesians, such as my friends and myself.

At the end of the day, I'm not encouraging you to like dangdut. Music is about one's personal preference, after all. But what I'd like to encourage us all to do is instead of mocking those who like dangdut, to rather respect them for being able to express their "Indonesianity" a little bit more than we can.

Indonesian dangdut sensation Inul Daratista is seeking an explanation from organiser IMS Prima Sdn Bhd over the cancellation of her concert which was scheduled to be held today at Stadium Tan Sri Haji Hassan Yunos in Larkin, Johor Baru.

Billed Konsert Inul Live in JB, the concert was called off after district officer Jaafar Awang refused to issue a permit to the organiser on July 10. A subsequent appeal by the organiser was also turned down.

IMS Prima has now slated the concert for July 27 at Stadium Putra in Bukit Jalil. But a visibly upset Inul, speaking at a press conference here yesterday, said she did not know if she could make the new date.

Journalists, covering the event, were taken by surprise when Inul nearly fainted while walking out. She had to be supported by several people.

Earlier, Inul said all she was asking for was to be given "clear justification" from the authorities on why the show in Johor Baru was cancelled.

"I've done nothing wrong and as far as media coverage is concerned, the local media members have been supportive," said a teary-eyed Inul, who was escorted by her publicity officer, Menasari Hassan.

"What's shocking is that I wasn't informed about the postponement until I reached Kuala Lumpur today.

"I'm uncertain if I'm able to perform on July 27 as I have to discuss it with my manager," Inul added.

Her manager-husband, Adam Suseno, who was not present in Kuala Lumpur had, however, confirmed her participation for the Bukit Jalil show after he was contacted during the press conference.

Inul arrived in Singapore with a 16-member entourage comprising musicians and publicity officers earlier yesterday before she was driven to Kuala Lumpur to attend the press conference.

IMS Prima director Nasir Abubakar said he was perplexed that the Johor Baru show was cancelled.

"I don't think it has anything to do with Inul's image. When my management queried about the matter, we didn't receive any explanation.

"I even had a private meeting with Jaafar on Wednesday but he was still adamant that the show couldn't go on," he said, adding that the company suffered a loss of RM300,000 due to the cancellation.

Inul, who is famous for her "killer gyration" or gelek gerudi is no stranger in Malaysia.

The singer, whose upbeat tune, Goyang Inul is popular here, enthralled local audiences in a series of concerts between 2005 and last year.

The Bukit Jalil concert will also feature several local bands, including the all-female outfit Candy and Abstrak Hingga Kebulan, as opening acts.

Is it techno? Is it traditional? No, it’s techno hybrid ethnic house music

The sign over the door reads: ‘Bar Dangdut.’ As you cross the crowded dance floor and approach the dimly lit DJ booth, you see two hundred or so cassettes lined up edge to edge around the perimeter. Cassettes generally do not have the same sonic presence at high volumes as compact disks or vinyl LPs, but the house sound system is impressively loud, clear, and punchy. The DJs, both young women, occasionally use a microphone to sing along with the music they play as they weave a seamless web of powerful sounds.

The male patrons on the dance floor dance in pairs, sometimes with one another sometimes with one of the dance hall hostesses or one of the ‘freelancers’ (the local name for non-employee women who befriend male patrons at dangdut clubs for money or for kicks) who frequent the establishment. The dancers, mostly middle-aged, some obviously intoxicated, appear to be enjoying themselves immensely as they joget (dance) to the latest dangdut hits by the likes of Meggi Z and Lilis Karlina.

Suddenly the soundtrack changes, and a strange, pulsating electronic rhythm takes over, a genre the patrons might recognize as house jaipong, a recently forged hybrid style that fuses electronic dance music with indigenous rhythms and melodies from West Java. It sounds like music from Mars. The alien sounds emanating from the club sound system quickly drive many away from the dance floor, while other pairs of dancers rush in with bold, aggressive moves that appear to be a cross between traditional Indonesian dance and the choreography from Saturday Night Fever.

Dangdut remix

Beginning in the early 1990s, Indonesia’s two major working-class-identified popular music styles, dangdut and regional pop (pop daerah), spawned new subgenres that combined their familiar melodies and musical textures with the sounds and production values of global electronic dance music. These subgenres acquired labels such as ‘dangdut trendy’, ‘dangdut remix’, ‘house Jawa’, ‘disco Minang’ and ‘house jaipong’.

These developments coincided with the diffusion of aspects of 1980s Jakarta club culture (once the exclusive domain of trendy, Westernised rich kids) into the leisure pursuits of the urban Indonesian lower middle and working classes. The new remixes and electronic dance music compositions were therefore ideally suited to the tastes of the clientele of downscale discos like Bar Dangdut, as well as for filling in the breaks between sets at nightclubs that still featured live dangdut performances.

The techno-hybrid grooves of ethnic house music and dangdut trendy are assembled from a bewildering array of musical genres: sampled snippets of African American slang, bits of Hollywood movie dialogue, rhythmic patterned shouts (senggak) reminiscent of West Javanese traditional music, and hip hop drum loops. Also added to the mix are sampled xylophones, barrel drums, kettle gongs, bamboo flutes, and other indigenous musical instruments representing various Indonesian ethnicities. These grooves prop up a wide repertoire of remixed or re-arranged dangdut and regional pop songs, as well as the occasional keroncong, folk, or classical (tembang) composition re-imagined as a dance floor anthem.

Since dangdut is itself a combination of Indian film song, Western hard rock, disco and Arabic pop (among other things) and regional pop is already a blend of Western pop and indigenous musical elements, the new dance music styles are essentially hybrids of hybrids. £hey represent a high-tech update for already complex urban identities through their often daring reconfigurations of global, national, and local Ôethnic’ sounds.

Sounds modern

In Indonesia, where the tendency to romanticise ‘traditional culture’ is strong among both national elites and Western observers, the techno-hybrid grooves of ethnic house music are a powerful antidote to the widespread notion that the rakyat kecil, the so-called ‘little people’, are somehow less ‘modern’ than those in the dominant class. Rather, the listeners dancing to this music in discos like Bar Dangdut find themselves in a close yet deeply troubled relationship with technology. In their day to day lives, these working class people encounter technology in a very different context — in the machinery in the factories where they work and the buses they drive. The music of the dangdutÅdisco offers a pragmatic, temporary escape from the drudgery of daily life. Technology, freed from the bounds of the workplace, returns as an intimate companion and source of sensual pleasure.

Elvy Sukaesih (born June 25, 1951) is one of the most popular singers in Java, Indonesia, and has been dubbed the Queen of Dangdut. Sukaesih has a significant fanbase in other Asian countries such as Japan. She has been a prolific recording artist since the late 1960s. Elvy Sukaesih's male counterpart is the King of Dangdut, Rhoma Irama. Elvy Sukaesih is revered as one of Indonesia's and East Asia's greatest ever singers. From the late 60s, her career developed alongside dangdut, the deeply funky local street music, that emerged from 1950s Orkes Melayu (orchestras) and blended various foreign music including Arabic, Indian and western rock with Indonesian instruments such as suling (flute) and gendang (tabla shaped drums). Elvy was the undisputed 'Queen of Dangdut' during the music's golden age in the mid 1970s to 80s, before (arguably) the raw energy and blistering musicianship got drowned out by drum machines and synthesizers. This CD charts the course of this golden age, with a collection of Elvy's biggest hits and rare tracks.

Elvy has the ability to sing with extraordinary power or extreme subtlety. She also uses a technique virtually unique to singers from eastern Asia, utilizing emotional ornamentation, glissandos and grace notes. Enormously popular in Indonesia, few albums by Elvy Sukaesih are available today outside of Indonesia. This CD was compiled by Japanese music producer Katsunori Tanaka to rectify this situation. It consists mainly of tracks she recorded for Permana Records when Elvy was in her prime. The track order follows Elvy’s path from one of her first hits in the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, a period considered the heyday of dangdut.

Elvy Sukaesih was born in Jakarta on June 25th 1951. Her father was a guitarist who used to play kroncong, another Indonesian music genre with a long history that flourished as the country’s national music in the days just after independence was declared.

At the root of dangdut lay Orkes Melayu. Orkes means orchestra, although it is quite complicated to explain the meaning of the word Melayu. It is one of the dialects (and a race of people) of Indonesia, a multiracial country, but also meaning Indonesia itself. Indonesian people speak some 250 different languages and when the country won its independence from Holland, Melayu was adopted as the nation’s common language. It became a symbol of a united nation in the late 1940s when the word Orkes Melayu was first used. Thus the groups named “Orkes Melayu” meant orchestras which played the national music of the newly born Indonesia.

The sound of Orkes Melayu didn’t simply get westernized, however, instead it became deeper and more rootsy, a crucial point in understanding dangdut. Suling (bamboo flute) and gendang (a pair of Indian tabla shaped drums) were added to produce the sound unique to today’s dangdut. Dangdut is a music which created an original Indonesian sound by taking in successively different foreign musical elements. It had originally no established roots or source. It was born from virtually nowhere to become one of Indonesia's most popular styles of music.

Elvy Sukaesih grew up as a singer in parallel with dangdut itself. She embodies the history of the music through her career and its allure through her skill. She is fully entitled to claim that she has been singing dangdut from its beginning. Elvy Sukaesih truly is 'The Dangdut Queen'.

Hips Don't Lie

In 1992, a 13-year-old provincial Javanese girl shook her hips to the tune of the 1980s Western chart-topper "The Final Countdown." Onlookers noticed. The rest, as they say, is history--and a potentially violent culture war in the world's most populous Muslim state.Today, that girl, known here by her stage name Inul Daratista, is Indonesia's version of pop sensation Shakira, particularly when it comes to her astonishing dance routines. She specializes in a wildly popular folk-music genre called dangdut, which sounds roughly like a mix between Arabic folk songs and Bollywood show tunes and is the cultural equivalent of country music. For more than 30 years the genre has been associated with Islamic teachings thanks to the efforts of a singer named Rhoma Irama, aka "the Rajah of Dangdut." Ms. Daratista, however, has other ideas for what the music ought to be about.

"People are always craving something new and I offer it," she says in an interview in one of the eight karaoke clubs she owns with her husband. "Dangdut can appeal to everyone. You can have jazz dangdut and rock dangdut and salsa dangdut all combined with the traditional elements. It's all part of the globalization process." She sings songs of romance and self-fulfillment: "I want your love only for me," goes a lyric that, in polygamous Indonesia, means rather more than it does in the United States.

As Ms. Daratista sees it, her message aims to inspire listeners, particularly young women, to be true to themselves. "If you live according to the rules of other people you won't accomplish a thing," she says. Others see it differently. In 2003, she produced a music video that, according to reports, shows her moving suggestively over a prone man who is playing a flute. A council of 57 Muslim groups labeled the video pornoaksi, or "porno-action," and called a million of their followers into the street to demand that she be banned from television. Legislation was also introduced in parliament to forbid all forms of pornoaksi.

Among those leading the charge was Mr. Irama, himself one of dangdut's great innovators. In the early 1970s, inspired by hard rockers Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, he introduced electric guitars to what had previously been an all-acoustic ensemble. He later underwent what he describes as a religious conversion. "Before, I identified music with drugs, sex and defying God," he says in his sitting room, which is dominated by a framed picture of calligraphic Quranic verses. "But I was drawn to the thought that music could serve as a corridor to Islam." In contrast to Ms. Daratista, Mr. Irama's lyrics often consist of such pieties as "gambling poisons your life."

To no small extent, Mr. Irama's artistic career both tracks and explains the gradual Islamization of what was once a firmly secular country. He recalls the first time he greeted his audience with the religious assalamualaikum (peace be upon you) rather than the secular selamat malam (good evening). He was met with a hail of boos and tossed objects. But his Quranically inspired lyrics and restrained stage presence eventually won a new and worshipful audience. Dangdut, previously popular among nominally Muslim abagan Indonesians, also became the music of santri, practicing Muslims.

Today, Mr. Irama is as much a political figure as he is a cultural one. He serves as secretary general of the Forum of the Islamic Umma and helped draft the pornoaksi legislation by elucidating the distinction between what he considers appropriate styles of dance and dress and the impermissible eroticism of Ms. Daratista. His description of the latter is itself nothing if not explicit: "grinding her hips, going up and down, showing her rear to the audience in a manner that simulates sexual intercourse" and so on. As for dress, he believes that performers who expose their navels, cleavage or the upper half of their thighs are all engaged in "porno-action."

Not everyone draws the line in the same place. Azrul Tanjung, an ally of Mr. Irama and the principal organizer of the pornoaksi legislative effort, speaks of a "scale of arousal" to judge whether any given behavior crosses the line. (A woman with her back exposed, he believes, is acting pornographically.) Another man, a teacher at a religious boarding school, says he has no problems with Ms. Daratista performing her songs in public--provided she keeps bodily motions to a minimum and dresses herself from head to toe in loose fitting clothes.

At the same time, Ms. Daratista also has some notable defenders. Former President Abdurrahman Wahid, spiritual head of the 40 million-strong Islamic organization Nadhlatul Ulama, has suggested that people offended by Ms. Daratista's televised gyrations would do better to change the channel than enact legislation. Another prominent theologian with Sufi inclinations, Mostafa Bisri, went so far as to paint a dancing Ms. Daratista surrounded by religious sheikhs. In the painting, the sheikhs appear undisturbed by the sight before them, as if to say that truly devout Muslims needn't resort to censorship to rise above earthly temptation.

These objections have succeeded in stalling the pornoaksi legislation, at least for now. It helps that at least some Indonesians are aware that it is Ms. Daratista who, in fact, has helped return dangdut to its secular (and sensual) roots, while it is Mr. Irama who is applying notions of Islam previously foreign to the genre. It also helps that Indonesians remain sufficiently proud of their traditions of cultural, political and religious pluralism to resist efforts to impose monolithic modesty codes that have little to do with actual pornography. Whether that will be true a generation from now is another question.

For her part, Ms. Daratista says she feels "heartbroken" by the accusations leveled against her and by the controversy she's stirred, not that she intends to retreat in the face of it. "To express myself as a human being is courageous, not pornographic." She proceeds to demonstrate the point with a display of singing and dancing this columnist isn't likely to witness again in his lifetime. As Shakira would say, hips don't lie.

Inul Daratista (born Ainur Rokhimah, 21 January 1979) is a dangdut singer and performance artist from Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. She became nationally famous in 2003, and is known for her suggestive style of dancing that has caused major controversy in Indonesia. Inul is a corrupted version of Ainur, and the singer's childhood pet name. As she began her musical career singing in a rock band, she adopted the stage name Daratista. Inul Daratista rose to national fame after a televised January 2003 concert in Jakarta. Her dance moves, which she calls Goyang Inul or Ngebor (lit. 'drilling'), quickly became the source of controversy due to her suggestive gyrating hip motions. Some conservative Muslim organizations such as the Indonesian Muslim Council (MUI) called for a ban on her concerts. She was cited as a reason to pass a national anti-pornography bill that was drafted during the height of the controversy in mid-2003, but as of 2005 has not passed. Dangdut is a genre of Indonesian popular music that is partly derived from Arabic, Indian, and Malay folk music. It developed beginning in the 1970s among working class Muslim youth, but especially since the late 1990s has reached a broader following in Indonesia.

A dangdut band usually consists of a lead singer backed by a band of four to eight musicians. The term has been expanded from the desert-like-style music, to now broadened to embrace other musical styles. Modern dangdut incorporates influences from Latin, house music, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, and even Western classical music.

Most major cities, especially on Java, have one or more venues that have a dangdut show several times a week. The concerts of major dangdut stars are also broadcast on television. In 2003 singer Inul Daratista became the subject of much controversy and criticism from conservatives over her suggestive, erotic style of dancing during televised shows.

MyIndo.com reported in 2003 that Project Pop, an Indonesian Nu metal band released a humorous tribute to dangdut titled Dangdut Is The Music Of My Country.

The King of Dangdut

Rhoma Irama (born December 11, 1946, in Tasikmalaya, West Java) is an Indonesian dangdut singer. During the height of his stardom in the 1970s, he became the self-proclaimed Raja Dangdut (King of Dangdut) with the group Soneta.

He was known as his stage name Oma Irama before he made a pilgrimage to Mecca and became a haji. He later took the name Rhoma Irama, which is an abbreviation of "Raden Haji Oma Irama" (Raden is an aristocracy title for Javanese and Sundanese cultures, but it is still unknown whether Rhoma Irama is a member of aristocrat class of Sundanese, which is known as his ethnic background).

His career began in the 1960s when he recorded solo records and with the group Orkes Melayu Purnama. He sang duets with many Indonesian female vocal stars such as Inneke Kusumawati, Rossy, and the later to be crowned 'Queen of Dangdut', Elvy Sukaesih. Once Oma broke from recording with the Purnama Group, he formed Orkes Melayu Soneta, the first so-called Dangdut group. In fact, Oma established the term "Dangdut" with a song by that name from the early 70's. Once Soneta was established in the early 70's, Oma changed his name to Rhoma and went on a decade long run of successful hit records and films, all of which starred Rhoma playing himself while performing all of his hits.

Rhoma Irama is also well-known as an imam and is the chairman of the Muslim Forum (FUI), a nonpartisan religious organization. In 1992 he taught Cahyono, one of the Indonesian comedians according to his conversion to Islam. Once, Cahyono stated that Rhoma knew all of the Catholic principles as well as its mistakes.

Rhoma Irama was in the news in 2003 for his criticism of the suggestive dancing of fellow dangdut singer Inul Daratista. Recently, he was ineligible to receive the PhD award from the American University of Hawaii in February 2005 after being busted for plagiarizing his title.

In a comprehensive research about dangdut, a local journalist cited an allegation that Rhoma Irama may have stolen some of the tune of his songs from Indian movie theme songs. He also one of the artists on the only CD containing dangdut music in the United States, which was released on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings as part of its Indonesian music series.
